- Take out medical insurance. Medical treatment is not free in Cyprus
and hospital bills (and medical repatriation) can be very expensive.
- Travel on a return ticket. Bring enough funds with you as bank
transfers can take time.
- Check Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice before travelling.
- Hiring a car, moped, boat or other vehicle? Do check beforehand: Is it
road-or seaworthy? Is there proper insurance cover and does it cover
injury to third parties? Wear a helmet (legal requirement) when on a moped
and drive carefully – an accident can ruin your holiday.
- Remember you are a guest in the country and respect Cypriot law.
Prison sentences have been imposed for crimes which may only incur a
warning in the UK. The British High Commission cannot obtain your release.
- Too much sun – especially if mixed with alcohol – can result in
dehydration and lead to serious health problems.
- Make sure your relatives know where to contact you in case of
emergencies. Enter next of kin details into the back of your passport.
- Be aware of strong seas and undertows. Always heed warning signs and
swim only from approved beaches.
- Don’t get involved in any way with drugs. Even being found in
possession of small quantities of soft drugs incurs severe penalties
including custodial sentences.
- Don’t try to make fraudulent claims on your insurance policy. The
police can and do prosecute tourists for this offence. Prison sentences
and heavy fines have been imposed.
- Don’t travel to Cyprus intending to take up casual employment. Cyprus
is not a member of the European Union, and all British citizens need work
permits before they can legally work in Cyprus. Working illegally can
result in prosecution and deportation. Don’t accept promises from would-be
employers that they will arrange work permits after arrival.
