  • Check Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice.

  • Get Insurance which includes medical evacuation to a neighbouring country.

  • Make sure that you get your passport stamped on arrival; this will avoid your being fined when you leave the country.

  • Enter next of kin details into the back of your passport.

  • Bring enough money; credit cards are widely accepted in Asuncion but not elsewhere.

  • Respect local laws and customs; Paraguay is a conservative society. Exercise modesty in how you behave and dress.

  • Beware of opportunist thieves; dress down and avoid wearing expensive jewellery. If attacked do not resist; many criminals are armed.

  • Avoid travelling on local buses; take taxis wherever possible. If you must travel by bus be alert and keep a careful watch over your belongings at all times.

  • Protect yourself from the sun; summer runs from December to March. The temperature is regularly above 40 degrees celsius but the sun is strong enough to burn at any time of the year.

  • Ask your GP for advice on inoculations; there have been reports of cases of malaria and dengue fever.

  • Don’t carry drugs: penalties are severe and prison conditions grim.
